There is a mouse in the house

Last week I reached under the kitchen sink to grab a paper towel.  To my dismay, I found a pool of water.  This led to a grand sweep of emptying the cupboard in order to sop up the mess.  It seemed to not have been there long as there wasn’t any significant water damage but needed to be looked after of course.  As each item came out, I started to notice more and more debris on the cupboard floor.  What the???? Awwww dang! Mouse poop.

So more stuff comes out of the cupboard and I am sure that this is just a figment of my imagination.  Nope!  It’s real.  We have a mouse in the house.  I decided to focus on the problem of the moment, the water.  I ran the water, no leak.  I sprayed the sink, still no water.  I had a brief moment of delusion and thought perhaps it was a circumstantial spill that had gone un-noticed.  There is hope right?

I then focused on the mouse issue.  I discovered the damage (poop) was between the sink and the cupboard beside it.  I figured the space between the floor and the cupboard was likely the new home of said uninvited guest.

Hubby was set in motion.  He brought home traps and insisted in setting them up with cheese, sure enough our guest was found at 1:16am.  Yes I do know exactly what time it was.

We decided to wait one more day and tried tempting a fellow roomie.  Traps were all clear.  Yay.  But what about the water you ask.  Dishwasher!  I called a plumber to figure that out.

We gathered in the kitchen to pull out the dishwasher and I don’t know who was more surprised the 2nd mouse living between the dishwasher and the countertop, nesting in a lovely pile of insulation, or the plumber who squealed like a little girl.  So back to trapping.  Time of death, 12:21am.  Yes that is the exact time.  For the record, this plumber doesn’t do appliances, so we are now minus $350 for the plumber (not all mouse related as I had a shower leak that he did fix up).  We are also minus a dishwasher that drains into the cupboard rather than the  drain and we have 2 mice that think we are a pretty cool living arrangement. Food, warmth and nesting material.

Appliance guy…$200 , Two mice evicted, dishwasher working, water where water is supposed to be and me?  I am sinching my wallet tight and eating at home for a couple of weeks sans the additional company.  Who knew something so small could cost so much?

Is that one of the little darlings pictured? Cuz if yes, oh – how adorable…you should knit him/her some socks and scarf.

Anyway – we already discussed this – you evacuated the house for a week. They were only skwatters :-)

Don’t assume you have them all. I saw the first mouse in August, and I’m not sure we’re done yet. We eventually caught six (three on three sonsecutive days in December, then two in one day, also December). I have everything you can have: snap traps, glue traps, poison. The last three days have been poop-free in the places it had been seen before, so we may finally be at the end. Good luck!!!
